The Review: Whats your Raashee?

whats-your-raasheeWatching the movie made me feel proud of my observation. My analysis of the Raashees is more accurate than what Ashutosh Gowarikar has shown. You dont agree? Read ¬†this –> Whats your Raashee, and then compare it with the movie.

Anyway, let us not spend too much time on the argument. Coming back to the movie, I guess you already know the story. Yogesh Bharatbhai Patel (Harman Baweja), an NRI from Chicago is called by his parents so that they can marry him. Yogesh’s family is actually going through a financial crisis. An astrologer tells them that the day Yogesh gets married, he is going to be super rich. That turns out to be true. How? Courtesy Yogesh’s maternal grand iven . But he has a wish. He will hand over every thing to Yogesh only on the day he gets married. So that is why the family wants to marry off Yogesh. While deciding on that, he bumps in to a book “Whats Your Raashee?” where he learns about the various sun signs. So he decides to meet a girl of each raashee so that he can try himself out with them and decide on whom to marry. Thats about it. The whole movie then revolves around Yogesh and his 12 prospective brides (12 beautiful Priyanka Chopras). Nice idea but sad execution.

The movie could have been more intriguing. But sadly though, it fails to strike the chord at the right moments. The biggest flaw of the movie, I would say, is in its editing. Most of the time it feels like we are watching different movie clips, one at a time. Besides not all raashees have been given equal and proper weightage. I guess Ashutosh has some favourites and some not so favourites. So ones that he likes are shown very nicely. The Capricorn female, for example, is not given any footage at all. Libra woman are methodical and practical. But they are charming too, and they smile a lot! The Sagittarius female did not come up well at all. And the Piscean was shown to be too stupid. Having said that, some of the depiction are near perfect. A Gemini is as bubbly as Kajal Thakkar, a Virgo is as caring, simple and stubborn as Pooja Goradia, A cancer is as emotional as the Hansa Parekh and a Scorpio is as exciting, sexy and passionate as Nandini. Ashutosh has also made an attempt to address some issues such as dowry, child marriage, the hate for NRIs. They gel well with the movie.

Performance¬†wise, I guess every one plays their part well. Harman though could have done better. I couldn’t stop myself from imagining Saif Ali Khan in the role. Priyanka is SUPERB! No one else could have done better. She is the life and blood of the otherwise drab movie. Rest of the characters, including Darshan Jariwala as the marriage bureau chief and Yogesh’s uncle and Anjan Shrivastava as Bharatbhai Patel, Yogesh’s fatehr have done notably well.

All and all, the movie is just a one time watch. There are some scenes that are really¬†likeable. And there are some where you feel the movie is stretched far too long. One or two songs are good, but nothing much. “Jao na” especially is hummable. ¬†May be when the VCD is out, I might want to buy it and watch only select scenes. Ashu, you could have done better!

R A N D O M Part II

I was reading an article on entrepreneurship today, by yet another guy who was lucky in business. Yes, it might sound very rude, but that is my belief. You got to be lucky in business. After all isn’t successful business a function of taking a right decision at the right time? And what is the ‘right’ time and the ‘right’ decision? How do you decide? You use your instincts. Simple! The one whose instincts are correct ends up on the right side. For me a successful business is all about one man’s vision and the belief of 100 others in him and his instincts.

Am I giving gyan to you? Then please dont read further. I dont want to be counted amongst those people who believe in giving gyan on almost every second topic they know, including entrepreneurship. Whether they are successful or not is another question. These are the guys who reveal secret to success. After all have you come across a guy who has not mouthed his secret to successful business? There are many of us who do not follow ‘Practice before you preach’. They only preach.

A friend of mine had once taunted me when I told him how and where I imagine myself. He said I’ll never be successful because all I want is a tailored suit, a cabin on the top floor, a revolving chair and a beautiful secy. Yes, was right. But that is not ‘all’ I wanted. Yes I want a cabin on the 50th floor. But I also want to own the building. I want to own the future of every employee working in that building. I want to put myself on the international map. And that is only a part of my dream. Of course I need a revolving chair as well. ¬†ūüôā

Dreaming is also another funny little thing. The problem with dreaming is that you tend to see where you want to go… the ultimate destination. But what about the path? Does the dream show us that? I remember a funny situation I had few years back. I was still in my engineering days and had attended a workshop in aptitude development. We had a session on goal setting. I dont remember the speaker, but he was a very aggressive man. He told us to aim high, set goals and keep dreaming about them. Every one listened patiently and by the end of the lecture, had probably set their goals already. After the session, I walked up to him and told him my dream. And I asked, “Sir an you tell me how do I visualize my path? I have set my goals but I dont know how to go about?” He was obviously¬†baffled. He was a successful guy. He must have set goals for himself. But he hadn’t set a path for sure. He just started some where, took a path and carried on. Thank fully he chose the right one and managed to reach where he was. But he did not know how to guide people on the right path.

It again comes back to the point this all started. Believe in your instincts and choose one good thing. Then follow it. Success will be yours!

PS: I have deliberately not tagged this post.

Max and the art of Story Telling

Love stories have been getting good response on my blog lately. The statistics say that at least 3-4 stories are being read by different people every day. Some of them have also asked if I wrote their stories. Some of them have actually asked me to write their stories as well. The story coming up will be one such.

Frankly speaking, when I started telling stories, I never expected such a response. I told stories and discussed other topics the way I wanted. Readers liked it and made them popular. Lot of people ask me how to write an interesting blog. Well, there are two way. You can either attract controversy or you can attract an audience. As far as story telling goes, there are following five golden rules. If you follow them, you too can write good stories.

  1. It is the narration. Lot of others might tell you that a good theme is a back bone of the story. Well it is, but then a good narration is then the nervous system. It is important for you to build your story properly. Every sentence should lead to another. The reader should crave for more… want to jump to the last para, yet be interested in every word of it. If you fail to do that, even a good theme might go waste.
  2. A good theme, as I said, is the back bone of the story. Normally you can not say which theme is a good theme. It is really a subjective matter. I’d advise you to select some thing that is closer to your heart. Then make sure you make the reader connect with it. Taking a cue from your own personal experiences is usually a good idea.
  3. Introduction is another important aspect. Introduce your characters  well. Give good importance in describing how they are, how they look and a little bit about their past. After all a good movie with unpopular actors seldom works at the box office. The reader needs to identify himself with the character. So give the important ones a good weightage.
  4. The build up to the main theme of the story is another very important aspect. Spend some time imagining the whole story inside your mind. Repeat the sequences and rearrange them if required. Some times you might want to start from a point and then go back to the past. Good idea, but make sure you keep all the strings attached. Spend time on details building up to the plot. Add dialogues wherever you can.
  5. All well that ends well. Believe me, I find this as the most difficult part to handle. Almost all the stories I start do not end well. By that I dont mean they dont end happily. It is not a compulsion to end your story on a good note. But it has to end on a conclusive note. Either it has to end the argument you started or it has to lead to another so that a part two can come up. Disjointed ends normally make a bad story.

So thats about it. With these 5 tips, it is me Mayur signing off. Look out for a brand new true story. ūüôā

Whats your Rashee?

Disclaimer: The following analysis is completely based on my own study of the zodiac and personal experiences with the respective females. It may not have any actual bearing of the sun sign in general or the persons in particular.

PS: This is going to be a long post.

what-s-your-raasheeAstrology is one of my¬†favourite¬†subjects. I like talking about it. So when Ashutosh Gowarikar has decided to release his much awaited movie ‘Whats your Rashee’ this week end, I thought this is a good opportunity for me to go deep and study the 12 women (of 12 different rashees) and give you a peak in from my eye. I hope you admire each of them. Find your self if YOU are one of them, or find your other, sister, girl friends or a wife.

Pisces: Let us start with the most charming of them all. A Piscean girl is the one almost every guy would fall for at the first sight. But he might change his opinion after spending some time with her though. A piscean girl is sweet, charming and very much womanly. She can sit with you all day admiring you and your manly characters. She will adore the flowers and will want you to take her to beautiful places in the world. But she can be deceptive too. Beware of her rare temper upswings. For this fish, when angry, can make you cry. A piscean girl is also very emotional. If you are going to going to tell her a bad news, make sure you take a packet of tissue papers. For she might need all of them. (Some Pisceans I know- Kshitija (my cousin), Manjiri (A good old friend) )

Aquarius: If you are dealing with a boss or a colleague who frequently changes her opinion and is characterised with mood swings, you are probably dealing with an Aquarian female. She is not the one who will charm the wits out of you, unlike a Piscean female. She is not the emotional type of person. And moreover, she loves her space and freedom. With Aquarians, you often feel that they are not loyal to you. In fact it is other way round. An aquarian, like a butterfly, might sit on every flower. But once committed, she will stand by her decision. She will give you the freedom to live the way you want, as she needs this too. Dont try to burden her with too much emotional bounds. She doesn’t need to be protected. (Some Aquarians I know- Madhura (School friend), Rajni (MBA friend), Vihitha )

Capricorn: Are you dealing with a Capricorn female? You probably know it already. She is hard working, she commands respect and more so, authority. Yet you will be bowled by the¬†subtlety and sensuality of a Capricorn. You might find one skimpy clad babe on the beach and another geek¬†buried¬†beneath a truckload of book. Whatever they do, they do it with a purpose. They are an earth sign. So undoubtedly they are practical. They are like goddesses when it comes to mannerism and sensibilities. You need to praise them, and praise them well to keep them happy. Be sure before you criticise. Capricorn’s dont like being dragged around. If you are looking for a sexy, well-mannered, clean and sensual partner, learn your lines, brush your teeth and go for her. (Some Capricorns I know- Chaitali (childhood friend), Snehal (A good friend and ex. colleague), Bhavana )

Sagittarius: Cant beat your girl in war of words? Check, she might be a Sagittarian. These females with a horse body and gifted with a sharp tongue, which often goes against them. They tend to spite you with their dialogues, which may not be taken in the right spirit every time. The problem with them is that they are down right honest. So you might not spend too much time dreaming with them. A spade for them is a spade, just another card. But if you ignore this, beneath their crocodile skin they are a very enthusiastic females. They like enjoying life and are very light hearted. She is emotional too, though she feels better concealing them most of the time. Often you enjoy being in her company courtesy her charm and communication skills.  (Some Sagittarians I know- Rachita (sister in law), Dipti and Priti (Good friends and ex. colleague), My mother in law)

Scorpio: Two words describe a scorpian female, Enigmatic and Mysterious. A relationship with her make you feel you are actually drawn to her magical powers, although you want to resist it. She will hypnotise you and mesmerise you, and she knows she can do it. In her, you might find the most dedicated lover. But do not ever try to insult her. For if you do, be ready for a tirade of sarcastic volleys all thrown at you with vengeance. In fact, scorpions are characterised with intense emotions, boy or a girl. It is difficult for her to be neutral. Either she will be full of passion and energy, or full of revenge. Determination and will power, whether in love or at work, dominate her traits. And if she is passionate about work, she will want her partner to dream high as well. She will not let you fail and she will not let you stop as well. Possessiveness is another strong venom she possesses. If you are her partner, make sure you dont give her a chance to doubt you for even a second. Otherwise may god save you. (Some Scorpios I know- Neha(cousin), Poonam and Sanjana (Good friends and ex. colleague), Sheetal Tai)

Libra: In marketing terms, a Libra woman is your one stop shop for all the needs. She is strong yet charming, intelligent yet timid, well mannered and delightfully elegant. She likes getting into arguments, bowling you over with her charm and winning the arguments with your heart as a bonus. She is clinical in most things she does. She is cleanliness freak and likes her partner to help her keep the house clean. She likes to smile a lot and you will often be bowled over by her charm. She likes to talk but will also offer a good ear when you need one. She will match the stroke to stroke in a tennis match and be equally passionate when in bed. One problem with Libra females is that they are a bit indecisive at times. Not that they lack courage. They are always unsure of the¬†altercation. If you are planning to run away with a Libra, make sure you dont leave the decision on her. If you are successful wooing a Libra, your life will be full of smiles. (Some Libra’s I know- My mother, Aditi (cousin), Neelam (Good friend), Shruti, (Good friend and ex. colleague) )

Virgo: My counterpart! Virgo women are normally the courageous selves. Not that they are not charming. In fact they have one of the best womanly charm. However this is combined with lot of guts! Virgo women’s characteristics profile is an odd mix of emotions and practicality, romance and common sense.¬†If she loves you, she will be extremely loyal and will go lengths to make sure you are alright. For a virgo female, her family is of utmost importance. At times, this pretty virgin is very critical and demanding as well. You might often have to land at her doorsteps with flowers because you hurt her feelings. She is subtle and intelligent. She is romantic too, but doesn’t like expressions too much. So no PDA with your Virgo girl. Let her do what she wants and she will be the best person on earth to be with. She has a rare ability to discuss both economy of countries and romantic poetries in the same forum. (Some Virgins I know- My grand mother, Pallavi (Good friend), Saumya (MBA friend), Jasmin (Good friend and ex. colleague), Shibani (good friend) )

Leo: The lioness is characterised with high flying tempers and very egoistic nature. There are times when you might want to run away from a Leo female. She is so bossy and domineering. But that is one trait that makes her the center of attraction every where she goes. The lioness knows how to grab eye balls. She is sensual, sexy and with lot of oomph and she knows that. She believes she is the queen and she leaves no chances to let others know that as well. Class and elegance are her virtues. The lioness is a combination of intelligence, wit, strength and talent, mixed with generous amounts of feminine charm. When in relationship, she can be the kindest person and will love you with utmost devotion. At the same time, she is extremely jealous and possessive and even the slightest suspicion can make her go mad. So, better not try to play the jealousy invoking tricks on her. (Some Leos I know- Mugdha (old friend), Vardayeeni (Colleague), Vaishnavi (cousin) )

Cancer: I haven’t been friends with a cancer female to date. Not that I know a person and dont want to. But I never came across. Cancer is a sign that has similar traits in both men and women. These crabs are normally very mysterious and confused. A cancerian female will have mood swings every now and then. So you would never be able to guess what she is going through at the very moment. She is very sensitive, emotional, kind and caring… and very very¬†secretive. It takes some time for the crab to come out of the shell and accept people in her inner circle. It is her fear for rejection that does her in most of the times. So if a Virgo female has lot of guts, she has hardly any of them. Be very careful with the words you use with her. If you hurt her, you might need 3 packets of tissue paper to wipe off the tears. She can cry like a baby. I’m not aware of a cancer female I know.

Gemini: Do you feel like you know two different females, two different minds with one body? You are probably dealing with a Gemini. She can be that chirpy charming girl one day and the sarcastic timid self the other. She is so bubbly and fidgety, it is¬†difficult¬†to tie her down. A Gemini likes changes and is least likely to be bound by a relationship. Not only that she has a charm, she is also very passionate about every thing she does. She will be romantic and full of passion. Try kissing her and she will giggle herself out. She is so vivacious and full of life that with her, you will forget even the deepest of troubles. She has the ability to light up the most somber of surroundings with her presence. One thing she hates and some thing you will never find with her are monotony and boredom. If the lioness is¬†possessive, she is the other way round. You stay out the entire night ans she wouldn’t even question. But you dont do that as well. With a Gemini, you will be often in the middle of the most soul satisfying conversations. ¬†(Some Gemini’s I know- Megha (old friend), Vandana and Aparna (Good friends and Ex. Colleague) )

Taurus: Have you ever seen a bull crying or even¬†whining? That is how a Taurus female is strong. Put her through the toughest of problems and she will come out fighting without shedding even a single tear. She is independent and has a mind of her own, but she does not want to dominate in the relationship. A Taurean woman also gets jealous, but only if you exceed the limits of casual flirtation. It’s better not to provoke her anger or you will be very sorry. She is intelligent but wont talk too much on brainy subjects. She also hates arguments. She is a gourmet and is also a good cook herself. She may not be the sexiest, but you are often bowled over by her charm. She will dress elegantly and will be very well-mannered. A Taurean woman will care for you when you are ill, will back you in your new business venture and let you take over the control of the home. And, you will always be treated to a warm, cozy home when you come back from office! The only Taurean I know well is my wife Rati.

Aries: If you have found a female who is surest of herself, she is probably an Aries. It is very difficult to please her. Because she has this incumbent thinking that she can do almost every thing on her own. And you manage to please her. You need not be the most manly guy. In fact, an Aries female hates flashy things and people. An Aries woman can survive even the toughest of circumstances alone and has the ability to come back even after the most gruesome tragedies. She can play the role of a female perfectly and, at the same time, can do everything that a man can do. She is possessive, but she doesn’t like to be possessed.¬†She can be very jealous even at the slightest of suspicion.¬†If an Aries girl gets hurt, she will become as cold as the ice in your fridge and this behavior may last an entire lifetime. An Aries female will never forgive you if you fail to fight for her.¬†In return, she will always be there with you, even if she has to go against the whole world. She has a bad temper, but it will go away as quickly as it came and leave no grudges behind. Some Ariens I know- Prachi Sahay (Old friend), Hirkani (my real cousin), Deepti (MBA friend).

Thats about it folks, I hope you enjoy watching the movie ‘Whats your Rashee’ as much as you enjoyed reading this post.

Tuesday Blues

I worked only for 3 days last week. Two days was the official weekend and then I took two days off because of ill health. Three days in the office were followed by another long weekend… All resulting in a Tuesday Blues!

It is already 4 and I’m desperately waiting for the watch to show 6 so that I can dash off. This is so boring.

I feel like going on a looooooooooooooooooong drive on my old bike (KB 125). Drive it on a lonely beach, then take a long stroll along the waves. Go on an exploration mission in the mountains. Just land myself into a distant unknown village. Go on a wild tiger trail……

Sigh! Tuesday Blues are bad.

How Healthy is Healthy?

I have been battling with this question myself for last one week. The reason for my pondering is the fact that I fell sick after eating healthy food. ūüôā

Let me tell you the whole story. Last week, my wife tried a tiffin service from Vital Foods. They provide healthy and nutritious tiffins to office goers. She liked it, subscribed it and also ordered one for me. It was a nice tiffin with one vegetable, one salad, high protein daal, an¬†appetiser, rice and four chapatis. I had it for 3 days, but didn’t really enjoy it. So I discontinued and went out to eat on Friday. On Saturday, I fell sick.

Now before you draw conclusions about the poor guys at Vital Foods, let me tell you that it will be unjust to squarely blame them for my illness. The problem is with myself. I have been away from home for several years now. My early jobs were such that I have survived most days on crappy food. Even after marriage, we get to eat the complete home made food only once a day, thanks to our work culture. Despite that, I manage to stay healthy. My body has endured the junk storm and has been adapted to the crap now.

I’m not joking! This is damn serious thing. I was telling Rats that humans have a tendency to adopt to the environment and conditions. We go to cold climates and we adopt. Similarly we go to humid conditions and we adopt too. But look at what we are doing to our lives? We have an AC in the living room, AC in the bedroom, AC in the car (or cab), AC in the office… and reduced immunity in our bodies. To battle that, we are trying to eat the basics and what the nutritionists suggest us. So that the body some how gets the nutritions and stays fit. But boy! you are not allowing your body to adopt at all. And moreover your central ACs are polluting the environment… so more global warming (meaning more ACs).

Coming back to food, I went a step ahead and checked what and where my building watchman eats when he is on duty. If I show you the place, you might develop nausea just looking at it. But he eats there and does a work that commands utmost physical fitness. He is healthy. I¬†haven’t¬†seen him taking sick leaves at all. ¬†I tried talking to the security guards and house keeping staff at the office as well. Same result. But if we eat there, we will fall sick. Why? because our body is not used to eating that level of crap.

Adopt guys! Adopt yourself. It is all in the mind! ¬†ūüôā

10 on TEN

Writing was never new to me. I have been ranting since I was 15. But I started blogging and putting my thoughts online only about 2 years ago. So when the ‘maxmayur’ blog came into existence in last May (inspired from the one and only Big K), I had silently wowed to inspire, provoke, coerce at least 10 of my readers or friends to express their views through blogs.

Today, that dream came true. I found my 10th reader who has started writing a blog and thanked me for inspiring him. I was actually over whelmed and flattered.

I know there are at least 100 others who I know can write. At least 10 others who are exceptional thinkers and good orators. Never the less, 10 is good and I’m looking forward to the next batch of 10.

Thank you guys!

Jet Set Stop!!!

Jet AirwaysPiece of news: 432 pilots from Jet Airways have gone on strike. This has forced Jet to cancel 174 domestic and 32 international flights. Jet has already sacked 5 pilots (2 last month and 3 yesterday). Now Naresh Goyal is threatening to hire foreign pilots.

Piece of Analysis: Whom should we blame for the discomfort of the passengers? Jet Airways? Pilot’s Guild? Bad working conditions? I say we should blame Mahatma Gandhi. Who else? During India’s freedom struggle, he taught us the mantra of non cooperation, strike and protests. Although he did it for a noble cause and gave it a name of Satyagraha. But now a days, whoever knows some thing about non cooperation goes on strike as per his whims and fancies. Look at Jet pilots. Is any body thinking about the thousands of troubled passengers? No one, I say.

One, Jet Airways is at fault for sacking two pilots for forming a union (National Aviators Guild). They shouldn’t have done that. Forming a union is legal in India, as long as it works for the benefit of the members and the employees.

Two, the Jet pilots are at a bigger fault for this shameless act of going on a mass sick leave. I know Jet management was wrong. But why do pilots need to form a union in the first place? Were they troubled or exploited? I heard pilots are paid heavily and very well taken care off. Was there a genuine problem? At least I have not come across in the news articles I read. Please, if some one can enlighten me.

Guys! Cut the crap and restore normalcy. The passengers are suffering.

29 1:40 2.2

Weird title?

  • 29- The distance in kilometers I travel to office one way every morning (after dropping Rats to Vikhroli. Return journey is 24.5)
  • 1:40- Time taken on an average to bad day.
  • 2.2- Liters of fuel consumed in a one way journey

Infinite is the level of frustration tackling the traffic.
