Abhinav Bindra scripts history, wins gold at Olympics

2008 August 11

I’m extremely pleased writing this small entry on my blog, which is going to be written in the history of Indian sports in golden words. Abhinav Bindra has engraved his name in the history books today permanently by winning India’s first ever gold medal in the individual events category (Read here). He won against all odds in the 10m air rifle category, beating the defending champion Zhu Qinan from China who bagged sliver and the current competition leader Henri Hakkinen, a Finnish who finished third.

This 25 year old lad from Dehradun has made all Indians proud and inspired others who are in the fray to win some more medals for India. While there are congratulatory messages coming from all ends, the debate that whether India is lagging behind promoting sports other than cricket especially those like Tennis, Shooting, Badminton where people have consistently done well still remains open and unanswered.

Congratulations to Abhinav and Cheers to India

Update 11/8 5:40pm PS: My company distributed really tasty sweets just now to honor Abhinav’s feat. Good gesture.
